About the trainers:

Julia  Pitkin achieved her Validation Teacher's certificate from the Validation Training Institute (VTI) in the USA in 2006. She hosted four visits from Naomi Feil to the UK between 2002- 2005 and co-facilitated the first Validation workers' course in the UK under the supervision of the VTI in 2006. Julia is an Occupational therapist with a postgraduate certificate in Dementia Studies and holds a certificate in Training Practice CIPD. She is currently studying for a Diploma Person Centred Counselling.

Person-Centred Validation is a process by which a therapeutic relationship is built on the practitioner’s congruence, unconditional positive regard and empathetic understanding shown to the individual.  It focuses on the feelings rather than the content of speech. The practitioner demonstrates their skills in observation, encouragement, listening, pacing, exploring, summarising, rephrasing, matching voice tones and non-verbal interactions. The individual feels the practitioner's empathetic understanding and responds accordingly as their deep psychological need is meet.

This certificate is ideal for people who want to use therapeutic interaction skills in their daily role. We believe this is the first of its kind in the UK and therefore warrants the title of Therapeutic Dementia Champion.
